The Ocean Shores Public School wetland is part of an ecologically significant wetland area that includes a listed Nature Reserve and council land managed as a wildlife corridor. Several endangered ecological communities are found here including:
• Swamp sclerophyll forest on coastal plain
• Subtropical coastal floodplain forest
• Mitchells Rainforest Snail
For this reason, and as one of few wetlands that are accessible for educational purposes, the school wetland project has attracted significant funding and community support. The project aims to engage all students in environmental learning and engagement in the school wetland through the implementation of the Wetland Curriculum and immersion in our film.
In 2009 work began to restore and rehabilitate the wetlands so that it could be accessed by students. The purpose of this curriculum is to involve the wetlands as an integral part of the schools educational programs. An important addition to support the curriculum involved the creation of a film to act as a virtual tour and an educational resource to promote the importance of this unique wetland. The Film can be viewed here Our Wetland Discovery Tour.
